“… it would be true to say the labels would not be where they are without Scott’s invaluable vision, design and input” – Tony ‘Justice’ Bowes
Despite having a soft spot for bespoke artwork design and illustration, it has taken me an embarrassingly long time to adopt a decent site icon and logo for the blog and my social media accounts. After almost six years of blogging and some hopeless scribbling on photo editors, I eventually decided to add a touch of art and aesthetics; a logo that would reflect the blog’s vision and output. For that purpose, the graphic studio Metro Design has delivered brilliant brand-new icons and logo. A complete retouche of the site though is a project for another day. The rather incomprehensible head title is the result of a stream of consciousness, paraphrasing a song written by Tricky (original title ‘Brand New You’re Retro’, featuring on his ‘Pumpkin’ EP, released on Island Records’ offshoot 4th & Broadway, 1995), which in all honesty caught my attention due to Alex Reece’s remix.
Metro Design is the new venture of Scott London, the electronic music producer known as Metro.
Based in Dunstable, UK, he’s been responsible for the design of a wide array of exquisite vinyl, cd and cassette tape artwork sleeves and collectibles (posters, badges, stickers etc), many of them hand-finished, rendering each physical copy unique and individual. His portfolio also includes a plethora of digital illustrations and logos for a variety of record labels (most notably for Modern Urban Jazz and their sub-label Muj, the re-launched Creative Wax, Blueberry Musik and his own imprint Ortem), digital download sites and social media platforms.
His unique style wavers effortlessly between futuristic and retro. Cinematic themes, rich colour palettes and stunning photography combine with minimal yet intricate designs, adding a new dimension to each artistic product. In addition to music-related art, Metro Design expanded their professional approach and scope to business-related work; from logo design and development for digital graphics to creative artwork, retouching and layout.
I can’t recommend highly enough Metro Design for any music-related or business needs pertaining to creative ideas, graphics and design. I value prompt communication, flexibility, understanding and timely delivery in all my transactions and my experience with Metro Design has been immaculate.
In the words of Tony Bowes, music producer and founder of Modern Urban Jazz:
“Scott has made my labels MUJ and Modern Urban Jazz look as good as they do. He has bought a style, execution and precision that has become synonymous with our output. His service is highly professional, on time and second to none. I cannot praise Scott’s work enough and it would be true to say the labels would not be where they are without his invaluable vision, design and input”.
